Privacy Policy
Last updated: February 15, 2026
The short version: dArkiv does not collect, transmit, or store any of your data on external servers. Everything stays on your Mac. We have no accounts, no telemetry, no analytics, and no way to access your data.
This Privacy Policy describes how dArkiv ("the Software", "we", "us", "our") handles information. dArkiv is a macOS desktop application that captures and indexes screen content, clipboard text, and audio recordings for personal search and recall.
1. Data We Do NOT Collect
We want to be explicit about what we do not do:
- We do not collect any personal information
- We do not transmit your captured data to any server
- We do not require account registration
- We do not use analytics, tracking pixels, or telemetry
- We do not use cookies or web tracking
- We do not share, sell, or monetize any user data
- We do not have access to your captured content, recordings, or transcripts
- We cannot recover your data or encryption password
2. Data Stored Locally on Your Mac
dArkiv stores the following data exclusively on your local device:
Screen Capture Data
Text extracted from your active windows using Apple's Vision OCR framework. Captures are stored in a local SQLite database on your Mac. You control the capture interval, mode, and which apps are excluded.
Clipboard Content
Text you copy to the clipboard (when clipboard monitoring is enabled). Stored in the same local database.
Audio Recordings
Microphone and system audio recordings for meetings and voice notes. Stored as WAV files in your local Application Support directory.
Transcripts
Speech-to-text transcriptions generated using Apple Speech framework or WhisperKit, both of which process audio entirely on your device.
Notes and Journal Entries
Personal notes and auto-generated journal entries stored in the local database.
Encryption
If you enable encryption, your database is protected with AES-256-GCM encryption with PBKDF2 key derivation (600,000 iterations). The encryption key is derived from your password and stored in your macOS Keychain. We do not have a copy of your password or encryption key. If you forget your password, your data cannot be recovered.
Where Data Is Stored
- Database:
~/Library/Application Support/OwlEye/owleye.db - Recordings:
~/Library/Application Support/OwlEye/Recordings/
3. Third-Party AI Providers (Optional)
dArkiv supports multiple AI providers for search, chat, and summarization. Your choice of provider affects what data leaves your device:
Ollama (Local — Default)
When using Ollama, all AI processing happens on your Mac. No data is sent to any external service. This is the recommended option for maximum privacy.
Claude (Anthropic) — Optional
If you choose to use Claude, relevant context from your captured data is sent to Anthropic's API for processing. This requires your own API key. Data sent to Anthropic is subject to Anthropic's Privacy Policy.
OpenAI — Optional
If you choose to use OpenAI, relevant context from your captured data is sent to OpenAI's API for processing. This requires your own API key. Data sent to OpenAI is subject to OpenAI's Privacy Policy.
You can switch between providers at any time in Settings. The app clearly indicates when a cloud provider is in use.
4. Payment Processing
Purchases are processed by Paddle.com, our Merchant of Record. When you purchase a license, Paddle collects your payment information (email, payment method, billing address). We receive your email and license key for activation purposes but do not store payment card details. Paddle's handling of your data is governed by Paddle's Privacy Policy.
5. License Verification
When you activate a license key, your email and license key are stored locally in your macOS Keychain. The app may periodically verify the license with Paddle's servers, which involves transmitting only the license key — no captured content or personal data is included in verification requests.
6. macOS Permissions
dArkiv requests the following macOS permissions:
- Screen Recording — Required to capture on-screen text via OCR
- Accessibility — Used for text capture via the Accessibility API (optional capture mode)
- Microphone — Required for meeting recording and voice notes
These permissions are managed through macOS System Settings and can be revoked at any time.
7. Data Retention and Deletion
You have full control over your data:
- Auto-deletion: Configure automatic data retention (7, 14, 30, 90, or 365 days)
- Quick delete: Delete the last 5, 15, 30, 60, or 120 minutes of history instantly
- Full export: Export all data as JSON at any time
- Complete deletion: Clear all data with one button in Settings
- App removal: Uninstalling the app and deleting the Application Support folder permanently removes all data
8. Children's Privacy
dArkiv is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.
9. Website
Our marketing website may use basic, privacy-respecting analytics (such as page view counts) but does not use cookies for tracking, does not collect personal information, and does not use third-party advertising trackers.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on our website with a revised "Last updated" date. Since we do not collect email addresses or user accounts, we cannot notify you directly — we encourage you to review this page periodically.
